Celebrating DSP Week: Honoring the Heart of RHA

This week, we join communities across the country in celebrating Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Week 2025 (September 7–14, 2025)! This is a time to honor the individuals who dedicate their lives to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

DSPs do so much more than provide care—they create connections, build confidence, and create opportunities for the people we support to thrive. To every DSP: thank you for the compassion, patience, and skill you bring to your work — we are deeply grateful for the difference they make each and every day.

The following DSPs were nominated by RHA employees for going above and beyond, and are being recognized for truly blooming in their roles. Below, we’re proud to share some of their inspiring stories, insights, and advice.

“What started as uncertainty quickly turned into a passion.” After getting to know the people she supports, Detra fell in love with the work. From prom shopping to everyday moments, she finds joy in their excitement and accomplishments. “Their smiles make it all worth it.”

– DyNiesha Henderson, IDD Qualified Professional ICF

“I was inspired to become a DSP because I grew up with friends who had disabilities, and I wanted to make a difference. Whether it’s cheering at baseball games or just learning something new every day, this work is incredibly rewarding and meaningful to me.”

“After losing my brother to cancer, I felt lost and prayed for direction. When I saw a DSP job opening at RHA, I applied—and I truly believe God placed me here. Supporting the individuals in my care has brought so much joy back into my life. In many ways, they’ve helped heal me as much as I’ve helped them.”

“Melissa is always willing to step in wherever she’s needed, consistently going above and beyond to support both her team and the individuals in her care. Her reliability, compassion, and dedication make her an outstanding DSP and a true asset to our organization.” Tonya Bolton, Group Home Supervisor (N-ICF)

“What inspired me to become a DSP was my passion for helping people—especially those who bring so much joy to the world. I wanted to make real connections, share laughs, and brighten their days.

One of my favorite memories is taking my clients swimming. Some were scared or didn’t know how, but they trusted me enough to try—and that meant everything. I also love spending holidays with them and making sure they feel like family.

To anyone considering this work: be genuine, kind, patient, and lead with your heart. I’m proud of how much I’ve grown—becoming more patient, understanding, and showing the people I support how much I truly care.”
