The First Step: Wilmington SAIOP Testimonial

A participant in RHA’s Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) in Wilmington, NC, recently shared these thoughts on how the program has benefited them in their recovery journey:

I’m an Alcoholic. I’m in my mid-50s and I’ve struggled with addiction most of my life. Binges, detox, hospitals, treatment centers, divorce and prison. Having been offered intensive outpatient programs (IOP) in the past I always thought “I’ve got this” then passed on the opportunity.

“I don’t know what I don’t know.” Trying to drink like a normal person is no longer an option. I’ve tried every possible way! Taking the time to be open minded to what RHA had to offer was the first step. The group has shown me that I’m wired differently and my allergy to alcohol, drugs (and many other things) needs to be recognized and understood.

The last three months the doctors, nurses, counselors, staff and other alcoholics (it takes a village) have helped me to take an honest look at myself. The foundation set by this program has given me the BEST START on my recovery that I have ever experienced.

Just don’t drink and do the next right thing, one day at a time.
