From DSP to Operations Director: Fatima Grows with RHA

After graduating with her undergraduate degree in 2016, Fatima Funderburk joined RHA as a Direct Support Professional/Habilitation Specialist serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). She worked on the Creedmoor, NC unit for several years, gaining valuable experience supporting individuals and helping them achieve their goals.
As she grew professionally, Fatima was promoted to a Qualified Professional (QP) position, where she continued to make a difference through her work. She had the opportunity to help an individual transition from facility-based living to supported living, witnessing him learning to cook, obtaining employment, and connecting with his community. Fatima describes this experience as “another reminder of how important and impactful the work we do at RHA can be. Even after no longer working as his QP, the individual reached out to inform me that he had moved into his own place!”
Fatima moved into the role of Non-ICF Qualified Professional for the Creedmoor IDD program. The position expanded her knowledge of service delivery as she learned more about working with LME/MCOs and provided support to individuals and their families. Fatima says, “I was fortunate to work alongside an amazing team and supportive leadership that encouraged my professional development and success. RHA has always been an organization that invests in employee growth, and that support has inspired me to continue my education.”
While working as a QP, Fatima returned to school to earn her Master of Social Work degree. After graduating and obtaining her LCSWA, she transitioned into Behavioral Health as a Licensed Outpatient Clinician. “I wanted to positively impact someone else’s life while also learning more professionally as a social worker,” says Fatima. “I like that everyone has a different story and that we have the chance to help them understand themselves, develop coping skills, and recognize their strengths.”
Today, Fatima serves as a Behavioral Operations Director, leading and supporting a dedicated team while helping to ensure quality services for the individuals and communities RHA serves. In this position, she is inspired by the opportunity to expand the services offered in her community. Behavioral Health Regional Director Rachel Kilgore says Fatima has “embodied growth, dedication, and leadership throughout her 10-year journey from Direct Support Professional to Director. She is driven, charismatic, team-oriented, and never afraid to hold herself and others accountable to a high standard. Anyone who has worked with Fatima knows that when the pieces come together and she connects the dots, you’re likely to hear her signature, ‘BOOM!’ It perfectly captures the energy, confidence, and passion she brings to her work and leadership every day.”
Fatima expresses her gratitude for RHA’s opportunities for education and career advancement. Through her promotions and career path, she has grown both professionally and personally.
Looking back on her journey, Fatima says, “I am grateful for the opportunities, mentorship, and encouragement I have received along the way. Being part of such a supportive work environment has allowed me to thrive, strengthen my skills as a clinician and social worker, and continue making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.”
