On September 24, 2006, Lisa Barnes started her career as RHA’s Walnut Creek Custodian Supervisor, hoping to find a place where her work mattered. While she found that her work mattered at RHA, she quickly discovered something much more important: she had joined an environment that constantly challenged her to grow.

Over the past two decades, the core of Lisa’s position has remained the same, but the landscape around it has transformed. Staying in the Custodian Supervisor role has allowed her to become a master of her craft while adapting to new technologies and the shifting needs of both RHA and the community. Her professional path has taught her the core fundamentals of commercial sanitation, chemical safety (OSHA and EPA standards), and preventative maintenance.

Lisa serves RHA by driving operational efficiency, maintaining strict safety and health compliance, and fostering a positive, accountable team culture. Her responsibilities include managing inventory, handling work orders through digital maintenance software, and performing routine quality inspections, while also managing a crew of seven staff members. Always looking to improve her team’s contributions, Lisa introduced structured daily checklists and hands-on training sessions that improved overall task efficiency by 30% and reduced supply waste by 15%.

Lisa’s expertise has informed her supervisory approach, which focuses on open communication and staff morale. “I believe that supporting and respecting custodial staff directly translates to better facility care and higher satisfaction in the people we support,” she says. Supported by leadership that has trusted Lisa’s expertise and supported her autonomy to make improvements, she has found deep fulfillment in passing on institutional knowledge by mentoring incoming staff and serving as a steady anchor for her team through times of transition.

Lisa’s 20th anniversary as Custodian Supervisor has inspired her to reflect on her career path: “What truly has inspired me to stay at RHA for 20 years is the tangible impact of our daily work on the individuals that we serve. I have enjoyed the profound privilege of watching the Walnut Creek facility grow from the ground up as it has been remodeled, transformed, and upgraded to meet high-quality standards. Every morning, I am motivated by the challenge of doing my job better than I did the day before, and by the shared values that RHA Health Services champions in our industry.”

Lisa, thank you for 20 years of dedication to raising the bar! Your commitment to quality makes a real impact on the people we serve at RHA.
